Land, Water, Culture

In North Carolina, 24 land trusts have collectively conserved more than 400,000 acres of farms, forests, rivers, wetlands, urban parks, coastlines and scenic vistas.

These organizations vary in size and geography, and many collaborate on shared conservation projects. Some are entirely volunteer led, while others, like Mainspring, began as volunteer efforts and have grown into professional organizations with paid staff.

Mainspring Conservation Trust is accredited by the Land Trust Alliance, a national organization that represents more than 1,700 land trusts across the United States.

Mainspring takes on projects that support:

  • significant local places connect people to each other and their shared cultural heritage.
  • healthy landscapes where plants and wildlife can thrive and people can connect with nature.
  • restoration or conservation of waterways in the region, leading to an abundance of healthy streams and clean water.
  • productive local farms that build economic vitality and sustainability in local communities.
